IPL 2020 – Week Seven – Preview and Tips

The race for the 2020 Indian Premier League playoffs will be decided in the last week of the regular season.

The defending champion Mumbai Indians have all but secured their spot, but the rest of the sides are still in a battle for the three remaining places.

Chennai Super Kings have been eliminated after an underwhelming tournament.

It will be a close race for the playoffs, although Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals look destined to miss the cut.

Delhi Capitals have collapsed, losing three-straight games. They are under pressure to turn it around against the Indians in their penultimate match.

Check out our tips for the final week of the regular term below.

Delhi Capitals v Mumbai Indians

The Capitals were on course not only to reach the post-season, but to take the top seed in the tournament. However, they have lost three matches on the bounce and have put their place in jeopardy unless they’re able to turn around their form.

Shreyas Iyer’s men lost a close one to Kings XI Punjab before being battered in back-to-back games by Kolkata and Hyderabad. Their quality bowling attack has gone missing at the wrong time of the campaign. Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and company have to find a solution quickly.

The Indians have capitalised and are on course to secure top spot. They dug deep to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore, courtesy of a late burst from Jasprit Bumrah with the ball. His figures of 3/14 kept the chase to a manageable total before Suryakumar Yadav scored a brilliant knock of 79 to secure the win. Rohit Sharma’s side are outstanding when they’re at their best.

The Indians will smell blood in the water and could edge a potential rival out of the competition. They’re our cricket tip of the week to win this contest.

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Sunrisers Hyderabad

Bangalore were not savvy enough in the key moments to defeat the Indians in their last match. They’re still on course to reach the post-season but need one last effort to get over the line.

Devdutt Padikkal was on form with an innings of 74 against Mumbai, but Bumrah prevented the lower order from adding valuable runs. Dale Steyn then had a game to forget with the ball, conceding 43 runs from his four overs.

RCB require improvement across the board, especially from Virat Kohli, who has been up and down in the tournament. The skipper needs to carry his team into the playoffs with a classic display.

Hyderabad are not going down without a fight. They were excellent against the Capitals, scoring 219 with the bat. Wriddhiman Saha fired a blistering 87 from 45 balls, while David Warner notched 66. Rashid Khan led the bowling attack brilliantly with three wickets for only seven runs. Sunrisers have the players at their disposal, they have just lacked consistency. It’s probably too little, too late for them.

RCB have to get the win to guarantee a playoff spot, and they should be able to edge out an inconsistent Sunrisers outfit.

Kings XI Punjab v Chennai Super Kings

Kings XI Punjab looked like they were done midway through the group stage. However, they’ve rounded into form and look like a side capable of going all the way. They still need to qualify for the post-season, though, and must beat the Super Kings. They’ve displayed a clinical edge to reel off five wins on the bounce, and we expect another here.

Mohammed Shami and Chris Jordan have been outstanding with the ball, and they could be the difference in this game. Mandeep Singh was on point with the bat last time out, while Chris Gayle provided fireworks with a fifty. Kings XI cannot let their hard work slip away now.

The Super Kings have not enjoyed a good competition. They’ve lacked control with the ball outside of Sam Curran, while their batting, excluding Faf du Plessis, has been very disappointing.

Despite Chennai recording an impressive win over RCB in their last match, Kings XI should have few problems easing over the line in this contest.

Kolkata Knight Riders v Rajasthan Royals

This will be a close one to potentially decide the final post-season berth. The Knight Riders have been up and down throughout the competition and were well beaten by Punjab last week. KKR have lacked consistency in both disciplines during the match. Shubman Gill scored an impressive half-century, but other than Eoin Morgan, there was no support from the rest of the team.

It has been the story of the Knight Riders’ season, but Lockie Ferguson could hold the key for them. If the New Zealander has a special day with the ball, he could be the match-winner.

Rajasthan’s hopes hinge on the performances of their star talent. When Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Steve Smith, Rahul Tewatia and Jofra Archer have fired – it has brought the Royals success. However, those moments have been too fleeting for Rajasthan to compete at the top. The Royals have left themselves with a bit too much to do in the closing stages of the season.

It will be a pressurised game, but one that could be decided by star men. We give Rajasthan the edge because of that factor.

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Delhi Capitals

The contest between Bangalore and the Capitals will have a huge bearing on the post-season. RCB have played above expectations and are finding performances outside of Kohli. AB de Villiers has been excellent, and for once the team have not been overly reliant on the skipper.

Chris Morris has led the bowling attack well, while Yuzvendra Chahal has been a contender for the Purple Cap. RCB have found the right balance and could well cement a place in the top-two with a victory over Delhi.

The Capitals are on a three-match winning run against Bangalore, including their 59-run triumph earlier in the season. Despite their form at present, Delhi still possess the most talented bowling line-up in the competition.

Teams can go through peaks and throughs in the IPL, and the Capitals might learn from their bad patch and beat RCB to take momentum into the post-season. They’ll need it.

It will be a close game, but we back Delhi to stop their slump with a much-needed victory.

Sunrisers Hyderabad v Mumbai Indians

The regular season ends when Hyderabad face off against the Indians. Mumbai will look to wrap up top spot in the IPL standings, while pending other results, Hyderabad could be in a scramble for the last playoff spot – although it appears unlikely.

Rohit Sharma will want his Mumbai side to finish their campaign with a flourish to send them into the playoffs with momentum. Their bowling attack has been on point, although Sharma himself will be eyeing a few runs after Yadav has led the way with the bat.

The Indians have won their last three meetings against Sunrisers, including a comfortable victory at the beginning of October. We expect their run to continue due to their experience and nous on the field. They’re a well-oiled machine and will be heading into the post-season with confidence.
