The COVID-19 pandemic continues to interrupt elite sport, and preparations for the 2021 IPL are no different. The 2020 season was delayed and played outside of India for just the 3rd time. The 2021 season will be affected too.
The provisional date for the 2021 auction is the 11th February, with franchises having to release their lists of retained and released players by 20th January. Further details of the auction have still not been decided, including the venue and due to the pandemic, all of these plans are subject to change.
As soon as the auction has been completed, we will update this page, preview the 2021 season and make predictions about Kolkata. Be sure to check back in for the latest news on KKR and the 2021 Indian Premier League season soon.
There are eight franchises that compete in the Indian Premier League over 60 matches. The initial stage of the tournament is a round-robin where the outfits face off twice home and away. The top four teams in the table advance to the post-season where they battle for the crown.
In the minds of the bookmakers and their predictions ahead of the event, KKR are not expected to contend for the crown this season. IPL 2020 betting trends show that odds for the Kolkata franchise range between 6/1 and 7/1 so there is value in betting on the team for the campaign. And given their consistency, it could be a solid punt to take with the prospect of a decent return.
The Knight Riders have won the IPL on two occasions, although the last of their triumphs came in 2014. They did reach the playoffs for the three years on the bounce between 2016 and 2018, only to lose in the Preliminary Stage in each attempt.
Kolkata failed to reach the post-season in 2019, although only on net run rate after finishing fifth in the table. Jacques Kallis’ men were made to rue a six-game losing streak in the middle of the campaign, which has resulted in a turnover of personnel in the off-season.
Brendon McCullum takes over coaching duties for the 2020 campaign, and the squad has been revamped through the IPL auction. The additions of Eoin Morgan and Pat Cummins strengthen the batting and bowling ranks especially, and Morgan also brings his strong leadership skills to the team, having guided England to success in the 50-over World Cup in 2019.
Below is a run down of the Kolkata Knight Riders 2020 IPL Team.
The list of Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2020 players appears to be a strong unit on paper, although championships are only won on the field. McCullum will enter the IPL 2020 season with a balanced roster, featuring talented fast bowlers in the form of Australia’s Pat Cummins, arguably the best paceman in the world, along with New Zealand international Lockie Ferguson.
Spinner, Kuldeep Yadav, is one of the leading players at his position in the T20 format, while Sunil Narine hands the Knight Riders a complement to the left-arm leggie at the other end, having twice being named IPL MVP. Andre Russell boasts big-hitting and deadly yorkers with his right-arm pace, offering balance in the middle order between the batsmen and bowlers.
The batting ranks look solid at the top of the order with Shubman Gill and Ntish Rana or Rinku Singh alongside him, although Tom Banton could push them to secure a berth in the top three. Eoin Morgan has ample IPL and international experience to hold down the middle order, while Dinesh Kartik will continue to lead the line. There are not many weaknesses in the side, but their bowling must be the strongest point.
Cummins and Ferguson are a devastating one-two punch at the top, while Narine and Yadav can hold down the middle overs to keep the stranglehold on. Russell is the x-factor with the bat and ball, and he will be the crucial player to hold the team together.
A potential pitfall could be the inexperience at the top of the order following the departure of Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa. Joe Denly is also not on the Kolkata Knight Riders 2020 player list, perhaps leaving the team short of an extra bowler to ease the pressure on Narine and Yadav. Other than that McCullum is blessed with a strong outfit for the IPL 2020 season.
The Kolkata Knight Riders made a statement in the IPL 2020 auction by making Pat Cummins the costliest overseas player in the history of the competition. They bid INR 15.50 crore to secure the services of the 26-year-old, who played four games for the franchise in the 2014 and the 2015 campaigns.
Cummins also played for the Delhi Daredevils in 2017, and although he has developed a reputation as one of the leading fast bowlers in the world, his IPL statistics have not been overwhelmingly impressive.
He has taken 17 wickets in his 16 matches at an average of 29.35 and aneconomy rate of 8.29. Cummins has made significant strides forward since his last appearance in 2017, and should he deliver the form he has displayed for Australia over the last two years it could narrow the Kolkata Knight Riders online cricket betting odds to say the least. McCullum and everyone else involved with the franchise will be expecting great things from the Aussie.
Morgan was an important signing due to his experience and he will ease the leadership burden on captain, Karthik. There was a belief Morgan could assume the captaincy for the IPL 2020 season, but McCullum has kept faith with Karthik. Instead the England man can focus on his batting where he is one of the top players in the world in the shortest format.
Morgan has not delivered his best form in the IPL, although his talent is undoubted. He will also provide support to youngster Tom Banton, who is the next exciting player to emerge from England’s ranks.
Banton impressed for the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League during his stint in Australia across the winter. He was also very good for Somerset in the T20 Blast in England last season. The 21-year-old will be desperate to make an impact in his first IPL stint.
Yadav is entering his seventh season with the Knight Riders and has developed a reputation as perhaps the best spinner in the world in the t20 format. However, he endured the worst season of his career last term, taking only four wickets in nine matches at an average of 71.50. This was unexpected and may explain why the team failed to reach the post-season. A bounce back season could be in the offing from the leggie.
Narine too has not quite been as effective as he was during the early stages of his IPL career. Both spinners are due to thrive sooner rather than later and it’s time for them to produce for the KKR.
Russell has been a cornerstone of the Kolkata Knight Riders for the past seven years. He was outstanding with bat and ball last season and another strong campaign will see the franchise being backed for the crown in the betting tips come April time.

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL twice in their history. Their first triumph came in 2012 after five years of underachievement. Under the charge of Trevor Bayliss, the Knight Riders qualified for the playoffs as the second seed after winning 10 of their 16 games.
They then produced a fine performance to see off the Delhi Daredevils in the Preliminary Round to qualify for the Final. Kolkata faced off against the Chennai Super Kings in the final and were set 191 to win their first crown.
An innings of 89 from Manvinder Bisla and a half-century for Jacques Kallis made the difference as the Knight Riders were able to claim the title by five wickets with only two balls to spare.
Kolkata were unable to defend their crown in the following campaign, but they bounced back in 2014 and returned to the summit of the IPL. Bayliss’ men qualified as the second seed after winning nine of their 14 games. Kolkata then faced the Kings XI Punjab in the Final.
Wriddhiman Saha scored the first century in an IPL Final to set the Knight Riders a daunting total of 200 to chase to win the title. Manish Pandey produced a special innings in response, scoring 94 at a rapid rate to allow the Knight Riders to successfully chase down the score with three balls remaining.
Since then the Knight Riders have been frustrated in their attempts to reach the Final. They qualified for the playoffs for three-straight years, winning twice to reach the second Qualifier Stage in 2017 and 2018, only to be crushed by the Mumbai Indians three years ago before losing out to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the following campaign.
The consistency of the team always makes the Kolkata Knight Riders betting odds intriguing and it would be no surprise to see them in contention for the crown in the IPL 2021 season.
IPL Champions – 2012, 2014 Best IPL Strike Rate – Andre Russell – 186.41 IPL MVP – Andre Russell (2015 and 2019), Sunil Narine (2012 and 2018) Orange Cap – Robin Uthappa (2014) Emerging Player of the Season – Shubman Gill (2019), Iqbal Abdulla (2011) Maximum Sixes Award – Andre Russell (2019)
Most Consecutive Wins – 10 Most Consecutive Wins (Season) – 9 (2014) Most MVPS – Four (Andre Russell x 2 and Sunil Narine x2)
Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2020 team have a strong chance to go all the way to win their third crown. They boast arguably the best player in the tournament in the form of Andre Russell, who has enjoyed more success than any other man in the competition.
Russell has been the model of consistency for the Knight Riders, providing stability with the bat in the middle order and pace with the ball. If he has another impressive outing, he could be in line for another charge at the MVP award, which will mean good things for the franchise.
The addition of Pat Cummins adds a potent weapon that will put pressure on their opponents. The Aussie can run through batting line-ups with his speed and deadly accuracy. With Cummins, Lockie Ferguson and the two spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Sunil Narine, Kolkata Knight Riders should be one of the leading contenders for the crown in the IPL betting odds.
There could be doubts about the quality of their batting ranks, and a lot hinge on the performances of their younger players, especially Shubman Gill, to take the next step in his development. However, coach Brendon McCullum has enough talent in his Kolkata Knight Riders squad to claim their third crown.
