Mumbai Indians have dominated the three meetings between the sides in the 2020 campaign – none more so than the first qualifier in the post-season. It’s a huge psychological advantage to take into the contest, although it won’t count for much once the match starts.
Rohit Sharma and his Mumbai team are seasoned veterans in the final. They won the competition last term with their final-over heroics and have more IPL triumphs than any franchise in the tournament’s history.
The Indians are a well-balanced outfit. Sharma is an excellent leader at the top of the order, supported by an array of talent. Quinton de Kock has been a dominant force opening the innings this season.
Suryakumar Yadav has come to the fore for Mumbai in 2020, with 461 runs. Exciting all-rounder Ishan Kishan has also been outstanding. His innings of 55 allowed Mumbai to ease past the Capitals in the first qualifier. Performances of that ilk have eased the pressure on the senior players in the line-up. Both Yadav and Kishan must remain at the peak of their powers in the final.
Sharma has struggled since returning from injury in the regular season finale. However, the 33-year-old is a man for the grand stage, and he can light up the final. Mumbai’s biggest strength is their two dominant bowlers. Even without Lasith Malinga, the Indians have boasted the best attack in the competition.
Jasprit Bumrah has been sensational and he tormented the Capitals in the qualifier. Trent Boult has been equally impressive with 22 wickets to his name. Expect strong outings from the duo in the final.
Delhi Capitals must slay the metaphorical dragon to win their first IPL. They have not reached the final before and therefore lack experience under the greatest pressure. Dhawan’s return to form was crucial in the qualifier against Sunrisers. He calmed the rest of the unit, allowing Stoinis to relax. If the India opener can thrive once more, Delhi have more than a chance.
Shreyas Iyer has led from the front for his team. The Capitals will need their skipper to be at his best in the field and with the bat in the final. He cannot afford to make any lapses in his decision-making.
The game will be likely be decided by which bowling attack comes out on top. Bumrah and Boult outperformed Rabada and Anrich Nortje in the first qualifier. Rabada bounced back with a sublime effort against Hyderabad, but he needs an even better performance to rock the Mumbai ranks. If he struggles, the omens will be bleak for Delhi.
Stoinis, Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin all need to pull their weight as well. Only a complete team effort from the Capitals will be enough to secure the crown. Mumbai have bossed the meetings between the two sides this season. It has been a clash of the champions against the rising upstarts.
The Indians have shown the nous and the guile to win their matchups with relative ease. Expect them to be pushed harder in the final, but they are our final cricket tip of the IPL 2020 season to win back-to-back titles.
